Raymond Archer convicted of contempt

Ramond Archer, Managing Editor of the Enquirer
newspaper. The Managing Editor of the Enquirer newspaper, Raymond Archer has been
convicted of contempt over his newspaper's account of court proceedings
in the ongoing trial of former Foreign Affairs Minister, Akwasi Osei
Adjei over some rice imports.
The High Court consequently ordered
a retraction of the publication and a publication of an apology to the
court and parties involved in the litigation. The retraction and apology
are to be published in the next edition of the Enquirer on Friday.
On
the phone to Raymond Archer, he told Myjoyonline.com that the
publication complained of and concluded by the trial judge to be in
clear contempt of the court, was a court correspondent’s account of the
trial but he as editor, accepts full responsibility for the offence and
will render an unqualified apology in the next edition of the paper.
The
court also imposed a bail term of GH¢50,000 on the editor, pending his
compliance with the order on Friday.
Akwasi Osei Adjei, who
served under the Kufuor administration, is on trial by the state for his
alleged role in the importation of some 300,000 bags of rice from India
which arrived in the country in 2009.
